Sump-41: All Killer No (Rad Suit) Filter – A Classic Van Saar Gang

I painted up a classic Van Saar gang for a Necromunda narrative event held this weekend. 12 players took part over 2 days at Dragon’s Lair Edwardstown. I painted the gang in a scheme based off of a photo from the 3rd edition Imperial Guard codex, and the gang name (and names of the gangers) are based on the classic emo rock band Sum 41 (I don’t know why, it just seemed appropriate somehow).

Champion (augmek) Davarik Baksch and Prime (leader) Deryck Whibleyus

The gang did well enough in the narrative event, but most of us were pretty rusty with the rules so the first day was partially spent re-familiarising ourselves but we got into the swing of it pretty quickly. Necromunda 2023 is a pretty solid game – far superior to whatever is going on in the current version of 40K.

The Augmek with the plasma pistol was the MVP taking out more enemies than the rest of the gang put together over the weekend, including taking himself out of action (and costing 140 credits to have healed by a doctor) with his pistol overheating in 3 out of 6 games.

The specialist with the techmarine backpack was converted in case I got enough credits to buy a Van Saar servo rig, which I did by day 2 and upgraded the prime. The Multi-Melta was given to an upgraded ganger who managed to advance to become a specialist. I gave the gang a melta theme as that’s what I had available, but given my time again, plasma probably would have been a better choice.

The scheme is based on a simplified version of this scheme from the 3rd ed Imperial Guard codex.

In the current edition, this isn’t a legal loadout, so I just ran all the gangers armed with lasguns.

The colour scheme was based on the following steps:
1. Base coat the rad-suit / bodyglove with GW Bubonic Brown
2. Shade with GW Flesh (contrast)
3. overbrush with GW Bubonic Brown
4. Paint on the camouflage with first splotches of GW Dark Flesh, then splotches (touching the brown splotches) of Vallejo US Olive Drab, then smaller splotches and lines of black, then dots of white.
5. The pouches are done with GW Snot Green, and the straps are painted black then GW Bestial Brown.
6. The bodyglove is highlighted with GW Zamesi Desert (bleached bone?) and also blacklining everything makes it “pop” a lot more.

The venue and Campaign Map

First Game – against Goliaths – I lost but only as we played a couple of rules wrong.

Second game – against Genestealer Cult

Third game- against Orlocks – another loss

Fourth game – against Delaque – I’m still in shock from this one…

Fifth game – against Palatine Enforcers

Final game – against eldar (Venators)

All in all I’m very pleased with the gang, and planning to buy a few more models to convert to have some of the weapon options from the current rules. I’ve got an Escher gang to paint, and I would like to build a Necromunda table of my own!

  1. Thanks for sharing the event pictures. I played the original A LOT back in the day.

The tables look a bit sparse for terrain, particularly scatter terrain. I know that terrain is a challenge for tournaments…so understandable. I imagine shooting gangs would have ended up with an advantage?

Did the mighty empire necromunda tileset determine where/who you could attack?

    • Yes the tiles determined who would play who and winning matches would get you extra settlements and income and so on.

I agree the tables were a little sparse, that’s partially because we wanted to contrast between the 2 Zone Mortalis tables which were very claustrophobic and the rest being more open and I think everyone getting less stuff built than they expected. Also the scenarios/campaign background which the GM wrote revolved around more of an urban theme than underhive as such.

The open tables did favour shooting gangs a bit (but no one complained, I had the most shooting focussed gang out of anyone but I didn’t feel I had a major advantage over anyone else). Also the zone mortalis tables heavily favoured close combat gangs.

But we have all decided to build more and have another campaign day or weekend later this year. So the challenge is on to build even more terrain!

Glad you enjoyed and I expect there will be more to come.

    • Thanks very much John I’m pretty happy with how the gang turned out and the event was a lot of fun. We’re planning a follow up in November/December too so hopefully there is more to come.
