Around a year or so ago, I finally acquired one of my all time favourite miniatures, the Rogue Trader Adventurers Citadel Official on eBay – paying rather too much – and naturally he was immediately neglected and not painted until quite some time later.
I decided to paint him as an Inquisitor, as I wanted to use him in my games rather more than would be possible for a civilian figure (we play 2nd edition 40K battles rather than more role playing or narrative skirmish games). I also wanted to explore the more human side of the Inquisition, which they presumably mostly are (as opposed to the power armoured super human Inquisitors who really must be comparatively rare).
Being that my main army is Grey Knights he fit in quite well (in lore terms anyway) being represented rules wise as an Imperial Guard Colonel with a command squad comprising four melta-gunners mounted in a Rhino or Chimera. In actuality, the humans were a massive weak link in the chain and were promptly dropped. I am not a power gamer, but with a 2000 point army having only 23 models in it, one has to be rather ruthless.
Some time later, therefore, he was finally painted – and I am rather pleased with how he has come out. I am currently working on finishing off his bodyguards.
His space-suit/armour was painted by painting watered down black ink straight over a grey and white zenithal primer coat. It was drybrushed with white. The rest of the areas were base coated then the whole model was coated in a mix of GW Flesh Wash and GW ‘Ard Coat. It was then highlighted with GW Fortress Grey and White.
I liked him so much I even wrote some background for him (unusual for me) and I may continue the story when I post up pictures of his bodyguard squad and vehicle.

Hrodebert Garran, Adeptus Inquisitor (Ordo Scriptorum)
(*From Robert Garran, Australia’s first civil servant and first permanent head of the Attorney General’s Department, and a justly admired man. Hrodebert’s petty and wasteful bureaucratic meddling should not be taken as a comment against Garran himself [the name was chosen to tie this small story into a real slice of history and because it sounded sort of grimdark in itself] but as a satire against bureaucracy in general.)
Excellent work mate, he looks spot on! Great background, and I love the historical reference 🙂

He’s great as an Inquisitor – I think the low-key, non-power armoured variety are more interesting characters. Really nice, tight paint. Looking forward to seeing the bodyguards.

Thanks Axiom🙂
As soon as I had the idea to paint him as an inquisitor I was pretty happy with it and the inspiration flowed easily after that. The bodyguards will be some 2nd ed era Imperial Guard painted as Inquisitorial troops. They should be done in a week or two.

A very pleasing post. I’ve recently started getting together 2nd ed minis to get back into 2nd ed gaming. I hope to start doing some soon-ish. So far I’ve collected a SoB army, SM and Nids. I’m aiming for 2k per force

Thanks, John. The details they achieved in these old minis are great, far superior to today I think, yet overall much easier to paint. 2k is about right for games of 2nd ed we find, and is also a reasonably easy army to collect and paint compared to the size of armies today. Also, the armies are well suited to a 6×4 table, whereas a modern game of 40k I think the tables are too crowded. There’s no room to manoeuvre!

That face! I just can’t stop looking at it. It’s so odd and characterful.
Great paint job. I really like this low key sci-fi vibe.

Thanks, Thomas. Such a great miniature, he almost painted himself 😉

I love it when you pop up in the feed. It’s like seeing a Tasmanian Tiger 😉 Great model and paint job. I love his face. That snarly scowl works a treat. The background is awesome too. You better continue it or I’ll send my own Inquisitor out to bring you to your knees.

Thanks IRO, what I lack in quantity I try to make up in quality. This particular model was so good it basically painted itself, it was a real pleasure. And, I guess I will have to continue the story – next time…

Fantastic ! You’ve really given him a lot of character when the initial model doesn’t lack much from the start. Excellent work !

Oh, well written! I liked him well enough on Facebook, but I had no idea he was an inquisitor. That little medallion just didn’t pop to my attention there as it did here. Nicely done! And I truly love your story. I look forward to more, This should be . . . interesting! I feel certain I will need more exclamation points should there be need for more expository copy extolling your splendid foray into Imperial bureaucracy and glorious Imperial victories!

Thank you, Poet 🙂 We shall see how it develops, I am ok with the story arcs but I am abysmal at writing dialogue. But I hope to be able to create a few short episodes of the sort that may have filled the side bars of a 1990s White Dwarf battle report…
thanks for the kind comments.

Dialogue is a challenge: giving characters different voices, making it feel both natural and poetic. It’s an art I won’t claim to have mastered. Though I continue to practice at it. Anyway, good luck and I look forward to more.

That sculpt is one of the tighter RT Adventurers that I have tackled so far, and you have really done it justice. The shoulder patterns and checked spats (or whatever they are called) are a great way of visually raising his profile.
Lovely.

Man does he look really pissed-off about something! And mean, simply mean! Well done!

Thank you! Glad you lik him. I am part-way through painting up a retinue for him to use in Kill Team and maybe as an Imperial Guard Command Squad allied to my Grey Knights in 40K. So, more soon(ish).
